Language Bridge
Reading app for multilingual learners
Reading With Home Language Support
Language Bridge is for multilingual learners, especially newcomer and entering level students who benefit from home language support while developing English. These students are often expected to engage with grade level reading before they can independently understand the English text. Language Bridge helps reduce that barrier by providing side by side translations, text to speech, and opportunities to listen and follow along.
Many of the public domain stories in the library have been thoughtfully rewritten and simplified for language learners. The stories preserve the central characters, events, and themes while using clearer language, shorter sentences, and more accessible vocabulary.
The goal is not simply to translate texts. It is to help students understand meaningful content, participate more confidently in class, and gradually build the English skills they need to read independently.
Access and Use
Books connected to K-5 ARC Core curriculum may also be added or made available upon request. This helps increase access to grade level learning for students who may be academically vulnerable because of limited English proficiency.
The app works best in Microsoft Edge for text to speech options and smoother audio playback.
Interactive Reading Experience
- Side by side English and home-language text
- Text to speech in both languages when supported
- Word highlighting so students can follow along as the text is read
- Language toggling for comparing vocabulary and sentence structures
- Listening support for students who speak their home language but do not yet read it
Educational Support
- Provides immediate access to meaningful, grade level content
- Builds comprehension and vocabulary
- Supports pronunciation and listening development
- Increases confidence and classroom participation
- Reduces dependence on teachers or classmates for constant translation
- Supports gradual movement toward greater English independence
Students can move between English and their home language as needed. They may first listen for understanding, compare the two versions, notice familiar words and structures, and then return to the English text with stronger comprehension.
Additional Languages and Books
More languages can be added upon request. If you have an MLL newcomer who speaks a language that is not currently available, please reach out. I would be happy to explore adding that language or preparing curriculum related reading support that better meets the student’s needs.
